If there is only a small damp patch, you do not necessarily need to treat the entire wall. Treat the visible patch and approximately 1 metre around it in all directions. (Many of our customers do this very successfully using just the 1 m² test kit.)
If dampness later appears next to the treated area, you should treat the entire wall and continue at least 0.5 metres around the corners onto adjoining internal walls.
Please remember: waterproofing your wall against penetrating moisture does not eliminate the cause or the water outside. It simply prevents the water from entering the building at that particular point. The cause—which is always water—cannot be eliminated altogether. You cannot prevent the outside of your building from getting wet (which does not harm the building!). What you can do is effectively and permanently prevent water or moisture from entering the building from outside.
The result: dry walls, a better indoor climate and less evaporative cooling at the walls. Always remember: you will never find mould on dry walls.
For Thor Protect, the wall must be fully accessible, clean and absorbent:
1.Remove all wallpaper using a scraper. Remember to remove any wallpaper paste residue as well.
2.Remove mould. Wear a protective mask, safety goggles and gloves.
3.Check the plaster by tapping it. Any loose or hollow-sounding plaster must be removed. Firmly attached plaster can remain, provided it is not gypsum plaster.
4.Remove all coatings completely, especially those that do not allow water to pass through. These include, in particular, enamel paint, oil-based paint, latex paint, silicone paint, acrylic paint, resins, rubber coatings, etc.
5.Remove nails, hooks and wall plugs. Seal holes and cracks larger than 0.3 mm with the sealing powder.
6.Remove dust, loose paint and other residue with a broom or vacuum cleaner to leave the pores open.
7.First, generously spray holes and cracks with well-shaken Thor Protect Primer, then seal them with the supplied sealing powder.
A water-permeable emulsion paint coating is less problematic because the primer and finisher can penetrate it. However, especially in older buildings, make sure this is the original first coat and that there are no older, impermeable paint layers underneath.
If you are unsure what type of coating you are dealing with, use a test kit first to make certain. Thor Protect always works, but you must strictly follow the application instructions in the user guide.
If you apply too little primer or finisher, the wall may not become completely watertight. While the finisher is still wet, you can re-treat the affected areas. A little extra primer is acceptable.
Too much finisher, however, can cause white marks. Wipe off any excess liquid with a cloth approximately one hour after application.
Once the finisher has cured, the treated surface will no longer absorb primer. If you are unsure, call us for free, no-obligation help with your application.
You can usually plaster the wall just one day after treatment. If the wall is very wet, wait until no more water is visibly seeping out. A bonding primer may be required before replastering.
Do not paint or wallpaper until the wall feels dry to the touch (check with your finger) and no new salts are appearing on the surface. The crystallisation process usually takes two to four weeks, and longer in exceptional cases. If in doubt, wait an extra week.
For subsequent finishing, use vapour-permeable mineral materials, such as lime plaster, lime-cement plaster or silicate paint. Some paints and most wallpapers—especially the paste—do not tolerate moisture still coming out of the wall.
For issues involving mould, condensation and thermal bridges, use Thor Protect Special Coatings as the paint finish to achieve a proper, lasting result. Standard emulsion paints and plastic-based paints are unsuitable.
You can also re-tile surfaces treated with Thor Protect. However, do not use tile adhesive containing synthetic polymers. Instead, lay the new tiles evenly in a full bed of cement, with no voids underneath, just as master builders did centuries ago. Those tiles are still in place today!
If the wall is still damp after application, allow some time first. Thor Protect usually cures after approximately 14 days. Depending on the substrate, however, it can take up to six weeks for the solutions to react fully and for the wall to become impermeable to liquid water.
Let the wall dry naturally and ventilate regularly. A construction dehumidifier is not necessary and should not be used. You can wipe up any water that seeps out with a cloth. Simply brush off any salt crystals that appear on the surface.
If the wall remains damp after six weeks, an additional treatment may be necessary in rare cases. A member of our team will then assess your individual situation.
For reassurance: Thor Protect always works. In very rare cases, an additional treatment is needed despite correct application. We have never had a case in which a wall could not be waterproofed at all.
No, please do not use a construction dehumidifier. Let the wall dry naturally and ventilate regularly.
If a lot of water is still seeping out of the wall, you can wipe it up with a cloth.
The wall surface should be completely dry after four to six weeks, and no new efflorescence should appear.
