Do I need to treat the whole wall or just the damp patches?

A small damp patch does not necessarily mean you need to treat the whole wall.  However, it’s important to bear in mind that water finds its own way. If I have a damp patch, I should treat an area of 1 metre in all directions around it. In many cases, that’s enough. But if it turns out that damp is appearing elsewhere, you really need to treat a large area, preferably the whole wall and at least 0.5 m around the corners.

How should I prepare the wall? What exactly needs to be removed?

The wall must be accessible for Thor Protect.
Loose plaster must be removed. To check whether plaster is loose, try tapping it. If it sounds hollow, work is required.

All coatings must be removed, especially those that are not water-permeable. In particular, oil-based paints must be completely removed, even if this can be somewhat time-consuming.
A coat of cheap emulsion paint isn’t such a problem, as it’s water-permeable. Both the primer and the topcoat will penetrate it and can seal the wall.

Nails, hooks and wall plugs must be removed. If they remain in place, the primer and topcoat cannot reach their intended destination: the wall. The holes must then also be filled with the sealing powder supplied.

What happens if I spray too little or too much Thor Protect onto the wall?

When applying the product, the basic rule is: you can use a little more of the primer, but under no circumstances should you use too much of the finisher.

If you’ve applied far too little, the wall won’t be sealed. Simply spray the damp areas again.

If you’ve applied too much, white patches may appear, but these can be painted over. Tip: If you’ve applied too much, simply wipe the excess off the wall with a cloth.

When can I wallpaper, plaster or paint the wall?

You can start plastering just one day after the treatment. The plaster is damp itself and can allow moisture escaping from the wall to pass through. However, if the wall is very wet, you should wait a little longer until the visible water seepage has stopped. Even good-quality plaster should not be overworked.

You should only paint or wallpaper the wall once it feels dry to the touch. Some paints and most wallpapers (particularly paste-backed ones) do not cope well with moisture still coming from the wall.

What should I do if the wall is still damp after treatment?

If you’re sure you’ve done everything correctly, then you’ll need a little patience. Thor Protect usually cures after 14 days. However, in some cases it can take up to 6 weeks for the solutions to complete their reaction and for the wall to become impervious to liquid water.

We work with substrates that do not tell us in advance whether their pores are tight or wide, whether they have many or few pores, and whether they provide a good or poor basis for the crystallisation taking place within the pores.

To put your mind at rest: Thor Protect always works. In very rare cases, follow-up treatment is necessary despite correct application. However, there has never been a case where a wall was not sealed at all.

Do I need to set up a building dryer to dry the walls after waterproofing?

No. A damp cloth is sufficient if too much water is still seeping out of the wall. Ventilation helps, but a building dryer is not required.
