Ms. Drojecka’s winning basement

Over the last few years, the customer noticed a musty smell in the ironing room that was getting stronger year by year.

Since the ironing room was actually always heated and apparently dry, there was no immediate explanation for the musty smell. When clearing out the linen cupboard, mold was already clearly visible on the back panel of the cupboard.

When the linen cupboard was moved away from the wall, the full extent of the dilemma became visible: Moldy woodchip wallpaper appeared behind the cupboard. The back panel of the cupboard was also heavily infested with mold. The back panel was removed and disposed of, then a new one was attached to the cupboard.

The affected woodchip wallpaper was cut away cleanly over a large area and removed from the damp wall with a spatula. Under the wallpaper, an area of plaster about two square meters in size was heavily saturated with moisture.

The plaster was broken and cracked in a few places. During heavy rain, moisture penetrated through the exterior masonry into the plaster and through the plaster itself.

This moisture was absorbed by both the wallpaper and the back panel of the cupboard, which in turn encouraged the mold.

First, the wallpaper was completely removed and the damp wall surface was treated generously with Thor Protect Special Mold Remover to kill the fungus. Then, the cracks and breaks in the plaster were sealed with Thor Protect Waterproofing Powder as described in the enclosed instructions.

Subsequently, the entire exposed area was impregnated with Thor Protect Primer No. 1 and then with Thor Protect Finisher No. 2 according to the instructions.

After 14 days, the wall had already dried out completely and no new mold was visible.

The waterproofing was carried out by Ms. Drojecka herself back in 2019. To this day, the wall is dry and the musty smell remains a thing of the past.
